Columbia Moulded Brown Wax Cylinder #9029, circa. 1901
An advanced quartette selection, from a moulded brown wax cylinder record. This cylinder was made during a short period (1901-1902) where Columbia issued their records with a playback speed of 185rpm, rather faster than the usual 144rpm of that era. Their intention was to provide a greater clarity and increased volume by using the standard cylinder format. Thus, the max. recording time was limitied to exactly 120 seconds, compared to 135 sec. at 160rpm or 150 sec. at 144rpm. 160rpm became the final standard speed in 1902 and most labels kept with it.
Please note that this recording is well over 100 years old. Songs and other contents of that era often contain clichés of different ethnic groups. Many of them are racial and/or political incorrect by our understanding. This recording is being offered for historical purposes only and does not reflect my personal views.
